A Brief History

In 1978, Rev. Ang Hoe Peng and his team set up Evangelical Chinese Church (ECC) to reach out to the local Chinese residing in Melbourne coming from all different places like China, Malaysia and Singapore. The church has grown since then and has branched out to 4 different locations: one in Blackburn, Springvale, Geelong, Casey Berwick and Box Hill.

Today, we have up to 1,500 in membership in our churches. Indeed God is great as from one man, many spiritual children have been birthed. The Box Hill church was the original mother church that late Rev. Ang and his team planted not knowing that today the most Chinese per capital residing in Victoria will be in Box Hill. Indeed, it was a prophetic move.
The Box Hill Church over the years has kept its tradition to operate in a bilingual setting where the church service will be conducted in 2 languages, mainly Mandarin and English.

Not until 2007 January, after years of prayer that the Church felt the need to start a fully English service for the second generation Chinese and the local community who do speak Mandarin as their first language. The purpose of this is to position ourselves as a welcoming and relational church to the wider community surrounding our Church where we have a huge mix of people group coming from different culture.

So now we have the 9am service in English-only and the 11.15am service in bilingual (Mandarin and English).

We hope that you by reading this brief history, can be inspired to be like our founder, late Rev. Ang to be a visionary and prophetic in the calling of God.  Let us all together reach out to our communities and beyond, impacting people from all nations!
